Dhaka, Broadcasting News Corporation:State Minister for Women and Children Meher Afroz Chumki Friday sought social vigilance against child marriage saying the phenomenon should be prevented in the interest of good health of future generation.
“An underage girl will consequently give birth to a malnourished child and it create a vicious circle of malnutrition eventually hampering the prosperity of the country . . . so this (child marriage) is not acceptable,” she told a discussion at Bangladesh Shisu Academy here Friday morning.
Besides, the state minister said, child marriage creates various social problems alongside endangering mother’s health as well and that is why people should stand by the government in spearheading a campaign against the phenomenon.
Bangladesh Shisu Academy and the National Girl Child Advocacy Forum jointly staged a the discussion preceded by a colourful procession to mark the National Girl Child Day.
Chaired by Director of Bangladesh Shisu Academy Mosharraf Hossen, the discussion was also addressed by Women and Child Affairs Secretary Nasima Begum, National Girl Child Advocacy Forum President Dr Badiul Alam Majumder and Country Director of Save the Children Mark Pears as special guests.
Cultural personality and Shisu Academy’s former director Falguni Hamid and UNICEF’s Country Director Edouard Beigbeder spoke as guests of honour.
