HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The suspense was palpable, the moment months in the making. So how did NBC’s Lester Holt kick off perhaps the most highly anticipated presidential debate in history?
“There are two economic realities in America today … why are you a better choice than your opponent to create the kinds of jobs” that will boost wages?
Hillary Clinton: “Build an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top.” Those includes “jobs in infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.”
She also cited proposals to raise the minimum wage and offer paid family leave.
She also acknowledged her opponent. “Donald, it’s good to be with you.”
Donald Trump: “Our jobs are fleeing the country. They’re going to Mexico, they’re going to many other countries.”
“We’re losing our good jobs.”
He also cited plans to cut taxes and “renegotiate our trade deals.”
