Dhaka, Broadcasting News Corporation :President Abdul Hamid Thursday suggested developing modern and environment friendly agricultural technology and reaching it to the doorsteps of the farmers for making the agricultural production sustainable.
He also underscored the need for giving importance to developing new
varieties of food grains compatible with the changing climate to ensure food security.
The President said this while addressing the 5th National Convention and International Agricultural Conference 2016 of the Krishibid Institution, Bangladesh (KIB) on KIB premises in the city.
“Farmers will have to be enriched with agricultural based information
technology so that they can use it efficiently to keep pace with the changing environment,” he added.
He said the present government’s target is to turn Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021 and developed country by 2041 by reducing poverty and ensuring food and nutritional security.
Bangladesh deserves appreciation for its achievements in developing new technology, different varieties of crops and seeds, he said, adding that agriculturalists and agricultural scientists have been playing the pioneering role in this regard. The challenge before the country’s agriculture now is to face with efficiency the challenges of climate change impact apart from fulfilling food demand for the huge population, he said.
“There is no alternative to diversification of agricultural production and marketing to maintain the success so far achieved in the sector,” he observed.
“We have to expedite the diversification process with a view to keeping pace with the globalization process and have to apply modern technology and marketing system effectively,” he added.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sayedul Hoque and Krishibid Institution secretary general Mobarak Ali also spoke on the occasion while Krishibid Institution President AFM Bahauddin Nasim presided.
