Dhaka, Broadcasting News Corporation : Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given the following Message on the occasion of the anniversary of the United Nations today:
“Bangladesh reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter on the 77th anniversary of the United Nations. On this auspicious occasion, I, on behalf of the people and the government of Bangladesh, would like to congratulate this global body for its leadership in underpinning the global challenges and building consensus on issues of collective interest during the nearly eight decades.
The United Nations and its specialized bodies have impressive accomplishments and championships on many fronts like decolonization, peacekeeping operations, humanitarian interventions in the conflict zones, social and economic development, implementation of MDGs and the ongoing SDGs, promotion and protection of human rights, keeping the climate change issue afloat as a global agenda and most recently its role in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the world continues to witness arms conflicts in many parts of the world, widening inequality, and no real progress in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and ending the arms race. Polarization, deglobalization efforts, and cold war mentality are taking root. The Palestine issue is always taking the floor at the UN. I trust the UN shall act more keenly to find a just solution by overcoming the long-standing debacles and safeguarding the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights. Peace and stability across nations are imperative to attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As the world gradually begins to recover from the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the spiraling crisis due to the Russia-Ukraine war has plunged the whole world into economic uncertainty, more importantly, has posed a real threat to global food and energy security. Therefore, the States already in a vulnerable position will now face even more acute challenges in attaining the SDGs. We firmly believe in the peaceful settlement of international disputes through dialogue. Therefore, we urge all parties to play a constructive role in de-escalating and settling disputes by peaceful means, avoiding taking any action that may aggravate the international peace and security order.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman propounded the peace and development centric foreign policy, which remains the guiding principle of our diplomatic engagements. As the leading proponent of a ‘culture of peace’ Bangladesh currently ranks as the top troop and police contributing country in the UN peacekeeping operations. Bangladesh has provided temporary shelter to more than a million forcefully displaced Myanmar nationals on humanitarian grounds. Since then, Bangladesh has continued to pursue a bilateral and multilateral approach to resolve the Rohingya crisis. The international community has already cited Bangladesh as the ‘role model of development’ because of our milestone achievements in the socio-economic sectors in the last fourteen years. Bangladesh has recently secured a historic win as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-25 term, which manifests the global confidence and trust in our robust engagements in multilateral diplomacy in promoting and protecting human rights. As a strong supporter of multilateralism, Bangladesh will continue to stand with the United Nations. We always want to see the United Nations as the seat of global governance in an objective and non-selective manner. We wish the United Nations must lead from the front and work to fulfill all expectations. On this occasion, let us bolster our efforts to create a more stalwart and inclusive United Nations based on mutual respect, partnership, cooperation, and solidarity.
Joi Bangla, Joi Bangabandhu
May Bangladesh Live Forever.”
