However, alongside mangoes, this year the district is turning into a symbol of new possibilities with the foreign fruit, China orange. Farmers are benefiting by cultivating this imported-dependent fruit locally. This is both increasing farmers’ income and reducing dependence on imported oranges.

In Ramchandrapurhat village of Ranihati Union in Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila, farmer Sayem Ali is successfully growing China oranges. Facing losses in the mango business, he started cultivating oranges in 2022 as an alternative. Within just two years, this enterprising farmer has bounced back.

Sayem Ali said that following the advice of the Agriculture Department, regular care and modern cultivation methods have resulted in good yield. By 2024, his initial investment costs were recovered. This season, he hopes to sell China oranges grown on 3 bighas of land for nearly 800,000 takas.

Every day, farmers, entrepreneurs, and interested people from various parts of the district visit his orchard. They are observing the orange yield, tree care, and cultivation methods.
