WASHINGTON, Broadcasting news corporation : President Biden\u2019s speech \u200bcalling out the MAGA supporters of former President Donald Trump was a \u201cslap in the face\u201d to Republicans, Texas Rep. Michael McCaul said Sunday. \u201cI think that if this was a speech to unify the American people, it had just the opposite effect. It basically condemned all Republicans who supported Donald Trump in the last election. That\u2019s over 70 million people,\u201d McCaul said\u200b on ABC News\u2019 \u201cThis Week.\u201d\u200b \u201cAnd, you know, saying that Republicans are a threat to democracy is really a slap in the face.\u201d The top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee said three networks decided against airing Biden\u2019s primetime speech Thursday in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. \u201cIt was a campaign speech before the midterm elections, and that\u2019s basically how I see it\u200b,\u201d McCaul told host Martha Raddatz. Biden, in what was billed as a speech about the \u201csoul of the nation,\u201d said Trump Republicans represented a threat to \u201cthe republic.\u201d \u201cToo much of what\u2019s happening in our country today is not normal. Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic,\u201d Biden \u200bsaid. \u201cThere\u2019s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans. And that is a threat to this country,\u201d he added. Raddatz asked McCaul if Trump should also be blamed for contributing to the political divisions in the country. \u201c\u200bWe know the rhetoric on both sides has been heightened. On Friday, Biden tried to walk back his fiery speech, telling reporters, \u201cI don\u2019t consider any Trump supporter to be a threat to the country.\u201d Turning to the trove of classified documents found at Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago Florida resort, McCaul said the former president \u201chas a different set of rules that apply to him.\u201d \u201cI have lived in the classified world most of my professional career, I personally wouldn\u2019t do that. But I\u2019m not the \u200bp\u200bresident of the United States,\u201d McCaul, the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said. As president, he said Trump had the ability to \u201cdeclassify a document on a moment\u2019s notice.\u201d \u201cI know they were taken out of the White House while he was president and whether or not he declassified those documents remains to be seen. He says he did. I don\u2019t have all the facts there\u200b,\u201d the congressman said. A more detailed inventory released last week of items removed from Mar-a-Lago by FBI agents on Aug. 8 revealed a number of sensitive documents, as well as empty folders, marked as classified.
