Italy’s Chamber of Deputies elects Lorenzo Fontana as speaker

ROME, Broadcasting News Corporation : Italy’s lower house of parliament elected on Friday, Lorenzo Fontana as its speaker, after winning 222 votes in the 400-seat Chamber of Deputies, according to Italian news agency, ANSA. A prominent member of Matteo Salvini’s Lega party, Fontana succeeded in securing the votes of most lawmakers from the conservative bloc. Meanwhile, Maria Cecilia Guerra secured 77 votes, with Federico Cafiero de Raho coming in third with 52 votes. It is worth noting that Fontana, aged 42, served as Italy’s Minister of European Affairs in 2019, and as Minister of Family and Disability from 2018-2019.
