National Human Rights Institution holds ‘Organisational Retreat’ with Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

ABU DHABI, Broadcasting News Corporation : The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) held its first organisational retreat with The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the context of enhancing cooperation and capacity-building in the various fields of human rights. The retreat was held between 9 -11 October 2022 in Abu Dhabi. The three-day organisational retreat tackled strategic visions of human rights work in compliance with the Paris Principles, introduced the framework of the international human rights system, working mechanisms along with the recommendations that result from its process. The sessions included identifying the best practices and mechanisms for national human rights institutions in line with international human rights standards. The sessions of the first day included understanding the tools and procedures related to the international human rights system, the process of implementing the Paris Principles in the work of national human rights institutions, and introduced the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), the Sub-Committee on Accreditation and its relevant regional networks. The second day’s sessions deliberated on the fundamental activities and main programmes to enhance the promotion and protection of human rights and discussed the sustainable development goals in relation to human rights. The third day’s sessions concluded with a review of the guidelines on preparing the main reports of national human rights institutions in accordance with internationally applied methodologies. The sessions also delved into the best practices when it comes to receiving and handling complaints that will be received by NHRI. The organisational retreat programme also included a visit by the OHCHR delegation to the NHRI main office and saw the ongoing renovation progress and amenities.
