Dhaka, Broadcasting News Corporation: The Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources has taken the matter seriously as the retail LPG market has been trending above normal levels. Monitoring the situation, the ministry’s advisor held an urgent meeting with the concerned department secretaries and officials in charge. The meeting reviewed the LPG market situation. In the arising situation, restoring normalcy in the LPG market was given the highest priority, and on Sunday (January 4, 2026), a meeting was held at the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, presided over by the Secretary of the Energy Department, with the LPG Owners Association and LPG operators. The meeting discussed in detail the ongoing LPG crisis. According to observations raised in the meeting, there is an adequate supply of LPG gas in the country. However, it was reported that some local retail sellers have created an artificial crisis in the market.Although limited problems have arisen at the import level due to price increases in the global market, shipping crises, and some cargo restrictions, they are not causing a major crisis in the market.

According to the information received, LPG imports in November 2025 were 105,000 metric tons, which increased to 127,000 metric tons in December. In other words, even with the increase in imports, there is no logical reason for the LPG supply in the market to decrease.

The meeting also noted that artificial shortages were created at the retail level based on the belief that the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) might increase the price of LPG cylinders this month. Later today, in the evening, BERC increased the price of LPG cylinders from 1,253 taka to 1,306 taka.

Additionally, considering the use of LPG as a green fuel, some demands raised by the LPG Association (including LC facilitation and reduction of imposed VAT) are being addressed through discussions with the relevant authorities.

In this context, the LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh created an artificial shortage.
