Ashis Chowdhury, Special Correspondent, Broadcasting News Corporation: BNP National Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed stated that paying proper respect to the martyrs of the 2024 student-led mass uprising is our responsibility, a national responsibility.

Tarique Rahman will pay his respects to the martyrs and visit their graves (Ziarat), and this will not constitute a violation of the electoral code of conduct.

He made these remarks to journalists while discussing contemporary issues in front of the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Thursday (January 08, 2026).

He further added that paying tribute to the martyrs of the 2024 student-led mass uprising is highly significant. The nation will always remember the sacrifice of the martyrs with gratitude.

Paying tribute to those who were martyred in the student-people’s uprising is not limited to any political boundary; it is a national duty. On behalf of political party leaders, visiting the graves (Ziarat) or paying respects to the martyrs is essentially a part of honoring their sacrifice.

Regarding the electoral code of conduct, he stated that generally, the code of conduct prescribed by the Election Commission (EC) remains in effect from the announcement of the election schedule until the conclusion of voting. There are typically no restrictions on religious ceremonies, visiting graves, or personal tributes, provided these are not transformed into large-scale political rallies or ‘show-downs.’

It is the responsibility of us all to preserve the memory of those who gave their lives during the nation’s critical moments and to uphold their ideals as successors. National unity is further strengthened through paying tribute to the martyrs.
