Chattogram, Broadcasting News Corporation: The five-act play ‘Prachya’ by dramatist Selim Al Deen was staged in its silent form (mime drama) by Pantomime Movement.
The performance was arranged on Sunday (January 11, 2026) in the gallery auditorium of Chattogram District Shilpakala Academy in the evening.
The saga of Soyfar and Nolok is the opposite tale to Behula-Lakhinder in ‘Prachya’. On the wedding night, Nolok succumbs to a snake bite. Even summoned exorcists and traditional healers cannot save him. Meanwhile, in search of the snake, Soyfar faces death and heaven simultaneously. Eventually, Soyfar finds the snake, but Sofar is stopped by elderly grandmother. This snake is the household snake, guardian of the home and Lakshmi, and brings protection to the house… it must not be killed. Struggling under the burden of debt, Soyfar brings his wife home with mortgaged money. Losing both land and wife, now his hopes, desires, and survival are all trapped in the cruel cycle of the poor. Presenting the two-and-a-half-hour play in 35 minutes is quite challenging. In several scenes, narrative methods were followed amid the silent performance.
The silent drama ‘Prachya’ was directed and adapted by Rizwan Rajan. The background music was composed by Shimul Yusuf, Raj Ghosh, and Shakur Shahriar, with set design by Jannatul Pinky, lighting planning by Md. Murad Hasan, costume design by Tamima Sultana, and choreography by Sajeda Saju. The cast includes Rajan, Saju, Dipanwita Chowdhury, Sayem Uddin, and Mejbah Chowdhury.
Before the performance, silent theater artists from Chattogram hosted a lively gathering with silent actor Rizwan Rajan, who recently arrived from the United Kingdom. During the gathering, Rizwan Rajan shared candid discussions on the dynamics of silent acting both internationally and locally, as well as the future practice of silent theater.
At the beginning of the event, esteemed social worker Hasan Maruf Rumi from the city gave a welcome speech. Ditiyo Bishwas sang, and Ankhi Akhtar recited poetry. The program was hosted by Mejbah Chowdhury.
