Ashis Chowdhury, Special Correspondent, Broadcasting News Corporation: Newly appointed BNP chairman Tarique Rahman has placed special emphasis on complete freedom of the media.
He made these remarks during a greeting exchange program with journalists and media workers organized at Hotel Sheraton in Banani, Dhaka, on Saturday (January 10, 2026).

At the time, he further added that freedom of the press is a fundamental element of multi-party democracy and essential for sustaining a democratic governance system.
He pledged that if the BNP comes to power, no one will be harassed for expressing their opinions, and there will be no undemocratic interference in the media.

He called upon media personnel to continue objective journalism and stated that the media would not be forced to suppress the truth or spread propaganda.
In addition to protecting the freedom of the press, he emphasized ensuring the professional security of journalists and creating an environment free from the influence of repressive laws (such as the Cyber Security Act).

He expressed hope that this face-to-face greeting exchange after a long time would further strengthen the mutual communication and friendly relationship between the BNP and the media.
Top leaders of the party, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were present at the event.

Editors of the country’s leading newspapers, Chief Executives of television channels, and leaders of various journalist organizations were present at the event. They exchanged views with Tarique Rahman regarding the existing problems of the media and future expectations.
