E-learning will be a powerful tool to bridge the gap between hills and plains

Dhaka, Broadcasting News Corporation: Supradip Chakma, Advisor on Chittagong Hill Tracts, has stated that ‘quality education’ and ‘livelihood improvement’ are the government’s main priorities to develop the Chittagong Hill Tracts into an advanced and modern settlement. He said that e-learning is not just about education, but also involves discussions on various contemporary issues, including the development of Bangladesh-Canada bilateral relations during visits to the hills.

It is a powerful tool to bridge the gap with the plains. It is a bold step to integrate marginalized communities with the mainstream.

On Sunday (February 8, 2026), when a four-member delegation led by Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Ajit Singh, met at the Advisor’s office in the Secretariat, Advisor Supradip Chakma made these remarks. During the meeting, they discussed various contemporary issues, including the development of Bangladesh-Canada bilateral relations.

Advisor Supradip Chakma, while outlining his work plan for the development of the hill region, says that it is not just an educated, but a technologically skilled generation that can build a modern Bangladesh free of inequality. Speaking about the government’s initiatives to expand education in remote hilly areas, he said that due to the lack of mobile networks in many parts of the hills, benefits are being provided through satellite internet (Starlink or similar technology). As a result, experienced teachers in the cities can directly teach difficult subjects like mathematics, science, and English online through e-learning, which addresses the shortage of quality teachers locally.

Advisor Supradip Chakma also mentioned that the government is working on ‘livelihood development’ to enhance the economic prosperity of Chittagong Hill Tracts. He said that the people of Chittagong Hill Tracts were not meant to remain poor. To make this resource-rich region economically self-reliant, importance is being given to smart agricultural technology, modern irrigation systems, and the cultivation of high-value crops like coffee, cashew nuts, and dragon fruit alongside Jhum cultivation.
The advisor clearly stated that the current interim government is determined to integrate the Chittagong Hill Tracts with the mainstream of the country. If this development effort is successful, the Chittagong Hill Tracts will become a model example for the entire country.

Present at the meeting were Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Additional Secretary Md. Monirul Islam, Joint Secretary Atul Sarkar, Joint Secretary Mohammad Mominur Rahman, the advisor’s Private Secretary Khandakar Mushfiqur Rahman, First Secretary of the Canadian High Commission Mr. Joseph McIntosh, Consultant of the Canadian High Commissioner AHM Mohiuddin, and UNDP Project Manager Mr. Yugesh Pradhanang.
